Today I learned that Comic Sans is secretly a force for good, and should be lauded and loved as an accessibility marvel for people with dyslexia (perhaps even 15% of the population). https://www.thecut.com/2017/03/the-reason-comic-sans-is-a-public-good.html
That’s all well and good, but the hatred is real, and the font is a horror for so many historical reasons. I can’t do it.
As a wee trial, I’ve installed the Open Dyslexic font (downloaded and then converted to web friendly formats here: https://onlinefontconverter.com/) though, any dyslexics care to comment? It looks pretty weird to my eyes. https://www.opendyslexic.org/
I use open dyslexic on my Kindle. Works well for me
Before open dyslexic there was dyslexie font: https://www.dyslexiefont.com/ which is unsurprisingly similar. Before that the ghastly, but relatively dyslexia friendly, comic sans.
Open dyslexic looks quite good to me and I hadn’t thought about putting it on me kindle! I’ve only recently needed reading glasses for low light and in that scenario benefit greatly from legibility so will be trying this on the kindle!
These fonts do look ‘unconventional’ but I think perhaps not in an oh my gawd make it stop comic sans way? Maybe creative folk will start developing some prettier dyslexic friendly fonts soon as the trait becomes less of a minority?
Yeah, it’s a little unconventional but I think perhaps, not awful? Do you find it easier to read?
